TikTok Shop Is Becoming a Storefront, Not Just a Feed

TikTok Shop has quietly become one of the largest storefronts in American e-commerce. U.S. sales reached $15.82 billion in 2025, up 108 percent year over year, capturing 18.2 percent of U.S. social commerce. Forecasts for 2026 put U.S. e-commerce sales through the platform at roughly $23.41 billion — a further 48 percent increase that would make TikTok Shop’s American business larger, by that measure, than the e-commerce operations of Target, Costco, Best Buy or Kroger.

The engine is the collapse of the funnel. On TikTok, discovery, evaluation and purchase happen inside the same scroll: a creator demonstrates a product, the product is tagged in the video, and checkout never leaves the app. More than half of U.S. social buyers — about 51 percent in eMarketer’s tracking — are expected to shop on TikTok in 2026, and the platform’s U.S. buyer base expanded from roughly 35 million to more than 50 million in a single year. During the 2025 Black Friday and Cyber Monday period, TikTok Shop sales exceeded $500 million across four days, with participating livestream brands posting sales growth above 80 percent.

The September 9.9 campaign in Southeast Asia showed the same mechanics at work in a mature market. TikTok reported average daily gross merchandise value up 70 percent year over year during the September 3–10 campaign, with buyers and shopping-related searches each up about 50 percent. The company credited growing use of search inside the shopping journey — sales generated through search rose 55 percent in 2025, and sales from the Shop Tab rose 67 percent — alongside its community-voted TikTok Choice Award for popular brands, whose winners saw search growth 15 percent above the platform average.

Scale is bringing scrutiny. Analysts tracking the platform note that average prices fell across most product categories even as volumes surged, that regulators flagged tens of millions of suspect listings late in 2025, and that surveys find younger shoppers split — heavy users for discovery, warier about purchase quality. Amazon sellers, meanwhile, have begun reallocating inventory and advertising budgets toward TikTok Shop, where content velocity matters more than keyword precision and conversion often hinges on the creator as much as the price.

For marketers, TikTok Shop demands a different operating model from search advertising. Winning creative is native, frequent and creator-led; the media plan looks more like a content calendar with a checkout attached. Brands that still treat the platform as a place to repurpose television spots are competing against sellers who post daily and sell live. The storefront is open. The question for 2026 planning is whether your brand is a shopkeeper there or just an advertiser passing by.
