Advertising is quietly moving from the page into the conversation. New formats now being tested allow people to begin a conversation with a business-sponsored assistant after selecting an ad, shifting the contest from the impression and the click towards the quality of the dialogue that follows.
Retail media is part of the same shift. Selected U.S. advertisers can now extend their campaigns into conversational AI environments, a convergence of shopping media and chat-based discovery. That raises a fresh measurement question for buyers: how should an AI-assisted conversation be valued against a conventional click? Measurement firms are racing to answer it, with attribution tools for chat advertising launching this month so campaigns can be reported alongside other channels.
The commercial rollout is widening beyond test markets. Chat-based advertising has expanded into Southeast Asia and Taiwan, supported by bulk creation tools for product feed campaigns and clearer review statuses so advertisers can see why an item was rejected. Account structures separating brand and legal names point to larger, more established advertisers setting up properly on the platform.
Consumer behaviour explains the land grab. More than half of global consumers now say AI recommendations at least sometimes influence their household and grocery purchases, according to recent consumer research, and more than a quarter have used AI-powered tools to research or decide what to buy in the past three months.
For digital teams, the advice from practitioners is to treat the new formats as a distinct discipline rather than a copy of search advertising. Conversational inventory rewards useful, well-informed assistants and clean product data. Brands that test early, while the auctions are still thin, may find the conversation considerably cheaper than it will be once everyone shows up.
There are cautions. Automated and conversational formats can be opaque about where an ad appeared and why, and practitioners warn against handing full control to platform algorithms without clean first-party data behind them. The brands likely to benefit most are those treating conversational placements as a new craft, with their own measurement attached, rather than as a line item to switch on and forget.
